CHICAGO (February 10, 2021) – CA Student Living (“CA”), the vertically integrated student housing investment management company, today announced that David Rose has joined the firm as executive vice president and head of institutional capital. Rose will play a crucial role in supporting the continued growth of the firm’s portfolio of premier purpose-built student housing assets by broadening its network of institutional clients.
“We are thrilled to welcome David to the firm at such an exciting point in our history,” said Michael Hales, president of student living. “Over the past year, student housing has continued to demonstrate its recession resilient qualities so we see nothing but opportunity on the horizon. Our goal is to continue to scale our platform by adding 6 – 8 new developments and 6 – 8 acquisitions to our portfolio, annually. David’s experience with strategy development and capital formation will be invaluable as we continue to execute on this goal. We are highly confident in his ability to best position the platform’s capabilities with prospective and existing institutional clients and consultants.”
Rose brings over fifteen years of real estate investment management experience to CA. Prior to joining the firm, David served as global head of consultant relations at Chicago-based private equity firm, Walton Street Capital. During his tenure, he supported the successful launch of its core plus equity strategy and drove the expansion of the investor roster within existing debt platforms. David is a graduate of The Ohio State University, Max M. Fisher College of Business, where he earned a degree in business administration with a major in finance and accounting.
“CA is known for consistent execution of institutional products — a trait that has never been more important than it has been over the past year,” said Rose. “The team’s ability to move regardless of the countless challenges posed by the pandemic is a true testament to the deliberately nimble design of the platform, disciplined investment strategy and network of capital partners. I’m excited to hit the ground running and work collaboratively with the talented team already in place to deliver on our robust pipeline of development and acquisition opportunities.”
In addition to hiring David Rose, CA Student Living has made several strategic moves over the past year with the goal of forming the core leadership team charged with executing on the company’s planned growth trajectory. As part of this strategy, four industry veterans and tenured CA team members were elevated including Cheng Chen (head of investment management), Ryan McBride (executive vice president of development), Betty Townlsey (senior vice president of portfolio management) and Matt Maxa (executive vice president of property management). Under this team’s leadership, CA Student Living reached 94% leased on its stabilized same-store portfolio, delivered nine new assets and closed on four new developments all while navigating the challenges posed throughout 2020. The firm also announced the acquisition of two operating assets and formalization of its joint ownership structure with long-time investment partner, QuadReal.
